Accounting Symposium: The University of Evansville’s School of Business Administration will host an Accounting Symposium focusing on International Accounting Issues on February 24, 2005. Featured presenters will include: James J Leisenring who was appointed to the International Accounting Standards Board in January 2001, and Susan B. Hughes, Ph.D., CPA, Professor of Accounting at Butler University.

James J Leisenring was appointed to the International Accounting Standards Board in January 2001. Before joining the IASB he was the first director of international activities at the US Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) from July 2000. He joined the staff of the FASB in 1982 as director of research and technical activities and became Chairman of the Emerging Issues Task Force when it was formed in 1984. He was appointed a member of the FASB in October 1987 and became its vice-chairman in January 1988. Mr. Leisenring served as chairman of the FASB Derivatives Implementation Group and the FASB Financial Instruments Task Force. He was also a member of the International Joint Working Group on Financial Instruments. He was the last chairman of the G4+1 group of standard-setters before it disbanded in January 2001. Before joining the FASB, he was a partner and director of accounting and auditing for Bristol, Leisenring, Herkner & Co. of Battle Creek, Michigan, a firm that is now a part of Plante & Moran. He served as Chairman of the Auditing Standards Board of the American Institute of CPAs and has been a member of several other Institute committees. From 1964 to 1969 he was a member of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Mr Leisenring received his BA from Albion College and an MBA from Western Michigan University. In 2003 he was elected by an international panel to the Accounting Hall of Fame, a highly prestigious award established in 1950 at the Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

Topic: International Financial Reporting Standards: Influence and Impact Right Here in Indiana

Susan B. Hughes, Ph.D., CPA, Professor of Accounting at Butler University, has twenty years of experience in university teaching, mentoring, and research activities. She earned an undergraduate degree in accounting at Franklin and Marshall College, an MBA with concentrations in accounting and finance at Miami University, and her Ph.D. in accounting at the University of Cincinnati. Prior to working in higher education, she was the vice president and treasurer of two banks and their related holding company, and worked for both national and regional public accounting firms in the areas of audit and tax. Her interests in international accounting resulted in her co-authorship of continuing professional education courses on the International Accounting Standards Board and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), recent papers on the influence of country accounting standards on auditing outcomes and financial reporting, a five week experience in the Mexico City office of KPMG LLP, and four months teaching New Zealand, international, and U.S. financial accounting standards at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Auckland University of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. She is the author of various academic and managerial publications, was a speaker at the Institute of Management Accountants Annual Conference and the American Accounting Association, and enjoys developing and presenting executive education courses.
